Machine translation post-editing (MTPE) is the process of having a professional human linguist review, correct, and refine text that a machine translation engine has already translated, instead of translating that text from scratch. Get that human step wrong, and the consequences stop being theoretical. A 2025 study published in npj Digital Medicine counted more than 25 million U.S. patients who face unsafe care simply because clinical documents never reach them in a language they can actually read, quickly enough to matter.<\/p>\n

MTPE sits between two extremes: raw, unedited machine output on one end, and fully human-translated text on the other. In practical terms, it’s what happens when an organization needs speed and volume but still wants a trained human checking the machine’s work before that work reaches a reader. One scope note before we go further: MTPE applies only to written text. Live, spoken work belongs to medical interpretation, which is a genuinely different service, and it gets its own section further down.<\/p>\n
