  • Why did you choose to be a translator? Why did you choose to be a translator? 3 Reasons:
1- Translating facilitates understanding and cooperation between cultures. A good translation serves to promote mutual understanding between groups of people with different values, customs, and language.

2- Translating is intellectually stimulating. Every job involves a quest for that holy grail of a perfect translation.

3- Freelance translating affords a measure of freedom not available in a 9 to 5 job. It allows me to assume other family responsibilities, travel, and accept assignments that are worthwhile to society as a whole.
  • I have lived, studied, and worked in Japan for several years. It is very interesting to know that you chose Japanese translation service though you have never lived in Japan. What made you select this language? Actually I have lived, studied, and worked in Japan for several years. I did not choose Japanese; the language chose me. I volunteered to serve a mission for my church when I was 19 years old. Although the decision to serve was of my own free will, I did not decide the location and was sent to Japan. I loved the language, people, food, and culture and still do.
  • Translation checking involves thorough knowledge of both the languages – Japanese and EnglishTranslation checking involves thorough knowledge of both the languages – Japanese and English. Can a person be an expert in 2 such different languages? Yes, but being an expert in 2 or more languages requires time, effort, and cultural assimilation. Frequent or extended contact (living in country) is essential to maintain expertise in both languages.
  • How do you continually maintain and improve your Japanese skills? How do you continually maintain and improve your Japanese skills? Translating everyday helps to maintain language skills. Extended residence in and travel to Japan to immerse myself in the culture by reading, writing, speaking, hearing, eating and breathing the language also helps.
  • Could you give us an example of an assignment that challenged your skills as translator?Could you give us an example of an assignment that challenged your skills as translator? I once translated a prospectus for an international finance deal between 2 sovereign nations. Although I was quite comfortable with the language, the stakes were quite high for rendering a high-quality translation. This added a feeling of exhilaration while doing the assignment.
  • How do you keep yourself updated with the recent happenings in the industry and the subject you translate? How do you keep yourself updated with the recent happenings in the industry and the subject you translate? Constant immersion in materials related to the vernacular. I spend much time on the internet searching for the most appropriate and widely used methods of expressions in a given field.
